Chavez was previously a Republican candidate for Cook County Board of Commissioners in Illinois. Chavez lost the primary on March 20, 2018.

Chavez was a 2015 candidate for Ward 31 of the Chicago City Council.

Chavez was disqualified from the February 26, 2019 Alderman 31 Ward election, as he did not provide the required amount of petition signatures.[1]

The city of Chicago, Illinois, held elections for city council on February 24, 2015. A runoff will take place in Ward 31 on April 7, 2015. The filing deadline for candidates who wished to run in this election was November 24, 2014.[2] In the general election for Ward 31, incumbent Ray Suarez and Milagros "Milly" Santiago advanced past Sean C. Starr and Irma Cornier.[3] Santiago defeated Suarez in the runoff election on April 7, 2015.[4] Renne "Tex" Chavez was removed from the ballot in December 2014.[5][6]
